CHARACTER
Name: Winry Rockbell
Series: FullMetal Alchemist
Canon: OU
Age: According to the canon timeline, I'd say 16.
Timeline: Ch. 104 — The Center of the World
History: Born to doctors Urey and Sara Rockbell in a rural countryside known as Resembool, which lies east in her home country, Amestris, Winry led a pretty innocent childhood... that is, until her parents were sent away to war. She and her childhood friends, brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, gradually get sent on a downward spiral. Ed and Al's mother passes away from illness, and she receives the news that her parents were murdered in the Ishvalan Civil War.
After their deaths, Winry is fostered by her grandmother Pinako, who sparks her interest in automail engineering/mechanics. This is what would become her ambition and drive in life, and likely what kept her head held high, even in the face of struggle. It comes in handy, in fact, when Ed and Al attempt to bring their mother back to life, with a bleeding and mutilated Ed in result, alongside an empty suit of armor that he bound Al's soul to in order to keep his brother alive. For months, the brothers are broken. Until they receive a visit from Lieutenant Roy Mustang, that is, who offers a spot in the military for Edward. Ed suddenly becomes determined to restore his brother's body and then some. In the next year, he endures grueling automail surgery, and afterward heads to Central with his brother, leaving nothing but a burned down house behind.
Meanwhile, Winry spends her early teenage years under the wing of Pinako, hoaning on her automail skills. However, being stuck in a stagnant small town proves to be unfulfilling for the girl. At fifteen, the Elric brothers finally contact her again. To make a long story short, she ends up traveling with them, from Resembool to Central to the city of her dreams, Rush Valley. While she finds where her heart is, the brothers have their own agenda, of course, and must leave her again for the time being. In the coming weeks, Winry becomes the apprentice of Garfiel, an expert automail mechanic. When Ed and Al return to visit, they mention visiting Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes, a good friend of theirs, and Winry insists she come along. They arrive in Central, only to find that Hughes had long since been dead.
And to make matters worse, Winry discovers her parents' killer, an Ishvalan criminal named Scar, confronting him with a tearful face and a pointed gun. Edward throws his body in front of Winry to protect her from the man, and when Scar flees, Edward talks his childhood friend down from her hysteria. Direct quote from the scene: "You're hands... they aren't meant to kill. They're meant to give life."
Before sending her off, back to Rush Valley, Edward makes a declaration, shouting from across the train station, "The next time I make you cry it'll be tears of joy! And Al and I will get our bodies back and you'll be crying tears of happiness! That's a promise!"
As Winry gazes out at the train tracks, she realizes that she's been falling for him all along.
Time passes. One day, she receives a call in Garfiel's shop from the military, requesting she make a trip to Briggs for needed maintenance. And thus begins another journey. Upon arrival, she realizes that she is merely brought to Briggs as a "hostage", being held over Ed and Al's heads by the Fuhrer and Major Zolf J. Kimblee, who were deceitfully kind to her. The teens are frustrated beyond belief, stuck in a seemingly sticky situation. However, they find the oppurtunity to escape when they come across Scar, yet again, in an abandoned mining town. They work together with Scar to fool Kimblee, allowing Winry to hightail it out of there with newfound allies while Ed and Al stayed behind with a few others. Unfortunately, Kimblee catches onto their game and sends Central troops to the Briggs fort. Ed has to send Al out to warn them, being that he is the only one that can go out into the raging blizzard.
Al does catch up with Winry and the others, fortunately; they make their way to an Ishvalan refugee camp to avoid the fortress. They soon find out that Edward has gone missing, though, and while it is a minor setback, they continue to move forward, confident that he is safe and well.
Winry, Al, and their allies spend the passing winter hidden in the rebuilding town of Lior, meeting new friends and strategizing a plan for the coming spring... when the "Promised Day" was supposed to arrive.
With the Promised Day around the corner, Winry heads back to her hometown, Resembool, only to comedically reunite with Ed. Their reunion is typical of the two — Edward tells her to flee to a foreign country, and Winry responds with a wrench to the skill and a determined speech about how he'll save the country, no ifs, ands, or buts. It isn't a long reunion, though, Ed leaving at midnight with his chimera and homunculus allies. All Winry can do is wait.
Personality: Miss Rockbell is a very emotional, strong-willed and emphatic person. Putting all her heart and effort into everything she does, she is very sympathetic toward other people, whether they be close or a mere acquaintance. Enthusiastic about machinery, Winry is usually at home near cranking gears, whirring bearings, and the smell of oil, becoming absolutely giddy when given the opportunity to interact with and learn about anything mechanics. The fact that she doubles her mechanic career with being an engineer deems her intelligence; y’know, ‘cause being an engineer requires excelling at math, amongst other things, despite her not finishing grade school.
Just as every other character in Arakawa’s manga, Winry holds flaws. For example, she is stubborn and straightforward, often calling others out for their weaknesses and delusions. Moreover, she can be rather naïve, possibly due to her innocent upbringing, and only wants to see the good in people (Kimblee, for example), which can lead her into fatal trouble. Known for being a “crybaby”, even in Edward’s eyes, she is very sensitive to the pain of others, therefore often sheds a tear on behalf of others, and isn’t afraid to show her emotions, though she fears that she’s too weak and can only wait rather than act.
Winry's stout heart allows her to make difficult and dangerous choices very easily so long as they coincide with her strong sense of duty and morality. As one who values family (immediate and extended) above most other things, Winry is a bit of a worrywart and concerns herself with the welfare of people she cares about. It is likely this care that makes her so popular with her clients in Rush Valley, all of whom are greatly moved by the attention to personal detail that she willingly gives to each of them.
Abilities/Additional Notes: She is an excellent mechanic, not to mention handy-woman. Can fix anything, really. Hell, she built a microwave oven living in the early 1900s.
Third-Person Sample:
[The first thing that she consciously notices is the sound of static, rustling though her eardrums, plowing at the back of her skull. She doesn't understand this noise—it's much too pitched to be a radio, after all. Her eyelids flapped open.]
What in the world...?
[Mecha junkie + advanced technology before her eyes = a riot that may take place.
...No. There is no time for that.
Why? Well, maybe it was the guide in her hands that just informed her of her planet ceasing to exist. Her heart skips a beat. She finds herself having to re-analyze the information. Again.]
....
[Her lips part, but no sound. Okay. She is convinced that this is a dream.]
First-Person Sample Post: Red swarms of... what were they, bodies?... darted around her, moaning, whimpering. She felt as if she was knee-deep in a hive of bees, or drowning to death in a sea of wasps. Instead of fear, only one emotion penetrated her: anguish. The lowest kind. The kind that absorbs you, makes all seem lost, makes all seem untouchable. Her chest ached at the sadness shed upon her. She didn't know where this sadness came from, not in the least. Her forehead tightened, brows quivering as she fought back lamentable tears.
The cries, the sobs, the moans. They almost sounded like... people. Men and women, coming from those blobs of red. She even heard a few coherent sentences...
Give me back my baby...
Please! Please, it hurts!
Help us!
I've finally become... the perfect being...
"Stop it..." the blonde murmured beneath the howls, unable to listen any further. "S-Stop it..."
She wanted slap her hands on her ears, but her body was fluid. It was as if she were a ghost, or some sort of spirit. All was crimson. Like a river of blood, with no promises of mercy.
And then it occurred to her. She stared down at her palms, taking one good look at the translucent figures.
Winry also noticed that she stood naked, hair swaying blissfully over her breasts and back. When she was able to eye other people, she realized that they hadn't an article of clothing either.
'Am I... one of them?'
That thought had her choking on self-pity. Confusion. Angst. A naive feeling, twisting her intestines into bile.
Suddenly, a light at the end of the tunnel. Or vortex of souls, to be accurate. Somehow, she found herself floating toward it. No one else followed. Why didn't they follow? If they were in misery, why didn't they follow? She wanted to take them with her, to set them free, but she had no power over her legs. Alas, she continued down the path until an eerie red paled into an ominous light. An infant's cry was the last lullaby heard until it converted into static.
